The Question
one question, arguedIs the scarcity story still worth what producers are charging for it?
The Verdict
The positionNo. Distillers are raising allocated prices and dressing up scarcity harder than ever, but the people who actually buy that scarcity — collectors on the resale market — have been paying less for it every month since May. When the buyers stop believing the story before the sellers do, the sellers are wrong.
The Evidence

The Call
dated and falsifiableThree predictions with dates on them, published so they can be wrong.
By 30 Sep 2026The next matched-basket secondary reading will show a fourth straight monthly decline, pushing the average premium below 35%.
By 31 Dec 2026At least one major producer (Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace, or Wild Turkey) will roll back or quietly discount an MSRP increase made earlier in 2026 on a barrel-proof or allocated SKU.
By 31 Dec 2026Brown-Forman will name a new CEO before it accepts, or further rejects, any acquisition offer.
Calls are never edited after publication. When one misses it is marked in corrections and stays on this page.
What I’m Watching
the publisher’s own readWhat I'm watching is that matched-basket secondary number in August and September. We've had three straight months of decline now — May up 4.1, June down 1.0, July down 4.7 — and if that reading falls again, that's not a wobble, that's collectors telling every distiller in Kentucky they're done paying up for the story. I'd also keep an eye on whether a 2026 BTAC bottle trades at or under its own MSRP; Eagle Rare 17 and Elijah Craig 18 are already most of the way there. If either happens, the scarcity premium isn't just softening. It's gone.
How this is built
The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
